Agent-Native is an open-source TypeScript framework for building AI agents with a proper UI, where the agent and the interface share actions, data and state.

    What is Agent-Native?

Agent-Native is an open-source TypeScript framework for building apps where an AI agent and a user interface operate on the same things. It's maintained by Builder.io, released under the MIT license on GitHub, and leaves the choice of model, database and host to you.

The core idea: one action, two callers

You define each capability once as a typed action with defineAction(). The agent calls it as a tool, the React UI calls it from code, and both go through the same validation and permissions. Because they share one PostgreSQL database and the agent is told what's on screen (current page, selected record), a person can hand a task to the agent, inspect it in the UI, fix something by hand and let the agent carry on. The agent never clicks through the interface; it uses the same action layer.

    What's already wired up

    • Agent chat embedded in your app.
    • Authentication, organizations, permissions and resource sharing.
    • Skills, persistent memory, scheduled automations and agent teams.
    • Actions exposed over HTTP, MCP and A2A, plus a CLI.
    • Deploy targets including Node.js, Docker, Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare and AWS, with Neon, Supabase or plain Postgres.

    Ready-made apps

The project ships open-source apps you can run as they are or fork: design, slides, analytics, calendar, mail, screen and meeting recording (Clips), forms, content and a brand asset library. A desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux bundles them together.

    When it's the right fit

It's aimed at developers who want an agent to do real work while people can see, edit or approve the results. If you only need one model response or a fixed sequence, the docs themselves suggest something simpler. The framework is free to use; you pay separately for your model provider (Anthropic, OpenAI, Builder.io or local Ollama) and hosting.

    Agent-Native features and use cases

•Typed actions shared by the agent, the React UI, the HTTP API and integrations.
•One PostgreSQL database that users and agents both read and write.
•Screen context (page, selection, view) passed to the agent.
•Embedded agent chat, skills, memory and automations on schedules or events.
•Agent teams and connections to external agents.
•Auth, organizations, permissions, audit log and sharing controls.
•MCP server, MCP client and A2A protocol support.
•Deploys to Node.js, Docker, Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare, Render, AWS or Azure.
•Open-source apps for design, slides, analytics, calendar, mail, forms and more.
•Use case: an internal team building a ticket tool where the agent assigns tickets and people review them on the same screen.
•Use case: a startup forking the slides app and adapting it to its brand and preferred model.

    How to use Agent-Native

    1Install Node.js 22 or later and pnpm.
2Scaffold a project with npx @agent-native/core create and pick a template such as chat.
3Start the dev server with pnpm dev and continue as a local user.
4Connect a model through Builder.io, an Anthropic or OpenAI key, or local Ollama.
5Write your actions with defineAction(); the agent uses them as tools and the UI calls them in code.
6Add React screens for browsing, editing and approving the agent's work.
7Deploy to the host and PostgreSQL provider of your choice.

    Agent-Native FAQ

    Is Agent-Native free?

Yes. The source is on GitHub under the MIT license with no usage fee. You only pay for the model you connect and your own infrastructure.

    Who builds Agent-Native?

Builder.io develops it and also operates the hosted apps and documentation at agent-native.com.

Which AI models can I use?

You can connect through Builder.io, bring your own Anthropic or OpenAI key, or run models locally with Ollama.

What do I need to get started?

Node.js 22.22 or newer and pnpm. A single npx command scaffolds an app with a UI, authentication and a sample action.

How is it different from a regular chatbot?

The agent isn't stuck in a text box. It works on the same data as the interface, and people can review and edit its output on normal screens.

Does the agent drive the UI by clicking around?

No. It goes through the same action layer the UI uses, so there's no browser automation involved.

    Where can I deploy it?

Node.js, Docker, Vercel, Netlify, Cloudflare, Render, Koyeb, Deno Deploy, AWS or Azure, paired with Neon, Supabase, RDS, Cloud SQL or any Postgres.

Can it talk to other agents or to Claude?

Yes. Apps can act as an MCP server, call MCP tools and communicate with other agents over the A2A protocol.

Are there apps I can try without coding?

Yes. A desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux bundles the design, slides, calendar, mail and other apps.
