What is Freebuff?
Freebuff is an AI coding agent you can use for free because it's paid for by text ads rather than a subscription. You describe what you need and it finds the relevant files, makes the edits, runs your project's checks and shows you the result. It's built on Codebuff, and the source is published under the MIT license.
Five ways to use it
- CLI: install it with npm and run it inside any project.
- Desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux, running parallel agents in isolated workspaces.
- Web and App Builder for full-stack apps with sign-in, databases and publishing built in.
- Cloud, which puts agents to work on GitHub repositories.
- Chat for questions, research and writing, plus an Android app (iOS is on the way).
Threads live in the cloud, so you can kick off a task on your laptop and review it from your phone. It connects to GitHub, Linear, Notion, Stripe, Vercel, Supabase, Sentry and more.
Models and limits
Rather than pushing everything through one model, it splits work across specialized agents that gather context, plan, edit and review. There's a curated catalog from several providers (DeepSeek, GLM, MiMo and Claude Haiku among them), and the desktop app can also drive Claude Code or Codex on your own account. Usage is counted in daily hours: the free plan refills 30 hours a day on the lightest model and fewer on pricier ones. Unsupported regions and VPN users get limited access.
Worth knowing
It's a solid way for students and developers to try coding agents without paying. The trade-off is in the data policy: your messages and usage can be used to personalize ads, and some models warn that submissions may be used for training. If you need more hours or models, paid plans start at $8 a month.

How to use Freebuff
Freebuff FAQ
Is Freebuff really free?
Yes. The free plan needs no card or credits. It's funded by text ads and capped by a daily hour allowance that refills every day.
How is it related to Codebuff?
Freebuff runs on Codebuff, the open multi-agent framework that provides its orchestration, tools and SDK.
Is it open source?
Yes. The GitHub repository is MIT-licensed and open to contributions.
Does it work everywhere?
It's available in every country, but unsupported regions and VPN connections get limited access to a smaller set of models and fewer hours.
What happens to my data?
The policy says messages and usage may be used to personalize ads and train ad models, and some models warn that submissions may be used for AI training. Read it before pointing it at private code.
Does it read files outside my project?
The company says no, apart from exceptions such as files you share in the chat or your agent instructions and skills.
Can I use my own Claude Code or Codex account?
Yes. The desktop app can run locally installed Claude Code and Codex with your existing provider account, separate from the included catalog.
Is there a mobile app?
There's an Android app, with iOS announced. You can start tasks, review changes and reply to the agent from it.
Is there anything for students?
Freebuff has a dedicated student page offering the same free, ad-supported access.
