What is Jina AI?
Jina AI is a Berlin-based AI company, owned by Elastic since October 2025, that offers a set of search foundation APIs so language models can read the web, understand documents and find the most relevant information in RAG systems and agents.
What is Jina Reader?
Prefix any address with r.jina.ai and you get clean Markdown back, ready to feed an LLM. You can pick the browser engine, filter with CSS selectors, wait for dynamic content, process PDFs, caption images and route through country-specific proxies. With s.jina.ai you search the web and receive results already converted to text.
Which other models does it offer?
- Multilingual, multimodal embeddings (the jina-embeddings-v5 family) for semantic search.
- A reranker (jina-reranker-v3.5) to reorder documents by query relevance.
- jina-ocr-v1 to turn complex documents into Markdown.
- An MCP server at mcp.jina.ai to use the APIs from assistants and agents.
A single key covers every product, processing can be kept inside the EU on request, and the Reader service code is published on GitHub. It is a common pick for teams building assistants over their own documentation or agents that need to read fresh pages.
Jina AI pros and cons
Pros: Reader works even without a key at a low rate limit, integration takes minutes, and the models perform well across many languages according to its research papers. Cons: usage is metered in output tokens, so predicting the spend for a given number of pages is hard, and Reader's model weights carry a non-commercial license, so self-hosting requires a separate Elastic license.

Jina AI FAQ
What is Jina AI?
Jina AI is an Elastic-owned AI company offering Reader, web search, embeddings and reranker APIs for RAG and agents.
Is Jina AI free?
Reader works without a key at a low rate limit, and new keys include tokens for non-commercial use. See the pricing section.
How does r.jina.ai work?
You prefix a URL with r.jina.ai and the API returns the page content as clean Markdown for an LLM.
How is usage measured?
In tokens: Reader counts response tokens, and every s.jina.ai search consumes a fixed minimum amount.
Do the embeddings support languages other than English?
Yes, the embedding models and reranker are multilingual and also accept images as input.
Can I use it with AI agents?
Yes, there is an MCP server at mcp.jina.ai for using the APIs from compatible assistants.
Can I self-host the models?
Yes, but commercial use needs a license sold separately by Elastic, since token top-ups only cover the hosted APIs.
How is it related to Elastic?
Elastic acquired Jina AI in October 2025 and also offers its models inside Elastic Cloud.
Are failed requests charged?
No, Jina says tokens are not deducted for requests that fail, so retries on errors do not drain your balance.
What are the best Jina AI alternatives?
On GptZone you can compare Firecrawl and Pinecone for web extraction and vector search.
